For the season of 1944 we have to offer our customers some of the finest, new rooted plants we have ever sold, grown from hardy, vigorous stock. Our plants are carefully se- lected, well cared for, cultivated often, then hoed and weeded by hand. This makes long healthy roots. Plants such as we offer will be sure to produce an extra large crop of berries.

All varieties we sell have been grown by us over a long period and have proved to be well adapted to our New England climate and heavy yielders of good quality berries suitable for market and home use.

This year every garden should have enough strawberry plants so that the whole family can have an abundance of fresh fruit in sea- son. They are rich in healthful vitamins as well as delicious. With most foods rationed and prices exteremely high it becomes neces- sary for every farmer to plan as never be- fore to raise just as much food as he is able. It is a mistake to omit strawberries as they are easily grown, not bothered by insects and so require no spraying or dusting. Any surplus berries will find a ready market.

HOWARD 17 OR PREMIER Howard 17 or Premier, as it is often called, is one of the best known varieties. It is a sure cropper of large firm berries. It is one of the earliest varieties we raise. The first berries are double; later ones are pointed. The crop they bear will surprise you.

CAMPBELL’S EARLY | This is another of our best early varieties. Plants and berries resemble the Howard 17. The Campbell is a heavy yielder. DORSET Dorset is a variety that runs freely and bears beautiful firm berries of excellent fla- vor. It is fairly early. FAIRFAX A mid-season variety which bears its fruit on tall stems. Berries are large and sweet, dark in color and well flavored. Plants ar very large. : ' CATSKILL Catskill has proved its worth as a mid- season variety. Berries seldom rot as they are on tall stems, well up from the soil. Berries are round in shape and a beautiful glossy dark red. They bear a fine crop of delicious berries. BIG JIM OR CORSICAN Big Jim, also called Corsican, is a late va- riety. Berries are large and sweet and of a very fine flavor. Plants are large. SENATOR DUNLAP This is an old variety, runs freely and bears an early crop of medium sixed berries which are fine for preserving. Some of our custom- ers will have no other kind. ABERDEEN Because of the many requests we have had for Aberdeen we have added it to our regular stock. Runs freely, has a glossy green foliage and yields a fine crop. PRICES Customers, please take into consideration the fact that raising strawberry plants is al-

most entirely hand work from start to finish. It requires a day’s labor to dig, trim, bunch and prepare 1000 plants for shipment.

Our pricés on any of the varieties described above are: 100 plants, $2.00; 500 plants, $8.00; 1000 plants, $15.00. We pay postage and ship promptly well packed in damp moss. We also fill mixed orders at the same price. If you wish your plants shipped C. O. D. we pay parcel post but there is a small C. O. D. fee which we do not pay.

GEM EVERBEARER

_After trying all the everbearing varieties we find Gem the most dependable. Our Gem plants set this spring will bear a good crop this fall. After the plants are set keep all blos- soms picked until July 1st. They start bearing in August and bear until the frosts come. I have picked berries for my table in November from Gem plants. No need to decide not to buy Strawberry plants just because you are not sure of living in your present location. Our Gem plants will bear this year. The fruit is large, round in shape, and very firm. It finds a ready market at fancy prices.

Our prices on Gem Everbearer are: 50 plants, $2.00; 100 plants, $4.00; postpaid.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Any good garden, corn or potato ground will grow strawberries. The ground should be planted at least two seasons before setting to strawberries if possible. Ground should be rich, in good shape and well drained. Rows should be 4 ft. apart and plants 18 in. apart in row. The method of planting does not mat- ter if you are sure to keep the crown of the plant level with the ground and pack moist dirt firmly over the roots. A loosely set plant will die. If the plant is set correctly the crown will not be buried with dirt and

none of the roots will be exposed. Even if your ground is well dressed it is a good plan to side dress your plants a few weeks after setting with potato or garden fertilizer. Never put fertilizer directly under the roots. Strew it along the row about 4 in. from the plant on both sides and hoe it lightly. Blossoms should be kept picked the first year from all varieties except Gem Everbearer When your plants start to run, space and set the runners in such a way that you will have a wide row. For best results mulch your plants in No- vember with straw or meadow hay. This mulch should be removed from the plants af- ter the frost is well out of the ground but left between the rows to hold the moisture and — keep the berries clean.

CARE OF PLANTS SHIPPED

When you receive your plants unpack at once and spread out in a cellar or some other cool place away from the sun and wind. If very dry sprinkle the roots. Set as soon as possible. Never expose the roots to sun and wind while setting.

We use every precaution to send plants true to name so that our customers may be sure they get what they order. In case of a mis- take, however, we will be gitar ihe for only the original purchase price. .

During our shipping season every mail brings us letters from satisfied customers’ all over New England and as far south as New York and New Jersey. These letters are ap- preciated by us and prove that we do our busi- ness in a fair, honest way and that we sell only plants of fine quality.

All of our plants are state-inspected and en- tirely free from disease.
